Friends of TS Queen Mary

TS Queen Mary is one of Britain's most famous ships.

Built in 1933, she is the original ship to bear the most famous of names. She is the largest and most luxurious pleasure steamer ever to be built for service in Scotland, with an amazing capacity of 2086 passengers.

TS Queen Mary has carried some of the most famous characters of the 20th century, including King George VI, The Queen Mother, The Princess Elizabeth, The Princess Margaret, future Prime Minister Anthony Eden, Mrs Eleanor Roosevelt and Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery.

Since saving TS Queen Mary from being scrapped, in 2015, Friends of TS Queen Mary have raised and invested £3M GBP in the project (both in cash and in-kind).

Over the course of 2020 the Charity has focused on delivering the vital design work needed to build this iconic ship back up; all of the new pipework, electrical systems, air-conditioning, outfitting and structural steelwork have had to be re-designed from scratch.

This work is almost complete and - in 2021 - we will be ready to undertake the next major phase of TS Queen Mary's restoration. With your support we will:

  • Install steel decks (which will be covered in beautiful new timbers)
  • Refurbish or replace almost 100 windows and portholes, on the main deck
  • Undertake repairs to the vessel's side shell
  • Insulate every space on board
  • Undertake so-called "first fix" pipework
  • Fit two new authentic timber masts
  • Replace various hatches on the boat deck, the bridge and the captain’s cabin, and
  • Replace the ship's current funnels with two new ones, manufactured to the correct 1933 rake and size.

The cost of all this work will be £2M GBP, and that is why we are appealing to you to donate today. Your gift - no matter the amount - will make a huge difference.

You will be a part of restoring a special ship that has played such an important part in our country’s history, for future generations to enjoy. You also will be helping to build TS Queen Mary’s legacy, which will be to inspire and educate youngsters from across the country, and to create employment opportunities for them.

Thank you!

Fantastic achievement to get this far with the restoration of a truly iconic vessel. Best wishes to Michael and the team. Colin and Joyce Seaton

I enjoyed sailing on QM2 in the late 60s and 70s.

G'day from Sydney. Used to work on QM in the late 90s in London, as hospitality staff when it was owned by Bass. Great times. The pub and Hornblowers the nightclub on the upper deck, and the two function rooms down below. Plus the sun deck which was RAMMED when the weather was good! Met some great people in the staff, including someone who's still a good mate today. In fact he flew down from Brisbane for my 50th recently. She was in reasonably good nick, at least superficially, back then, but would be great

My late father was often a passenger on the Queen Mary II in the late 1930s and late 1940s, and I saw her at Dunoon in the late 1960s, in her latter Caley colours. I have more recently seen her at the Quay on the Clyde, and would welcome her re-entry into service.

On Sunday 31st July my family were privileged to be given a very impressive tour of the TS Queen Mary by Captain Mark Yeomans. My father, as a young man and working for Thomas Reid and Sons helped produce the drawings for the steering gear. I wish the Friends of TS Queen Mary every success in this enterprise of bringing this ship back to life

I had volunteered with the TS while I was unemployed and now I have a new position which doesn't give me the time to come up as often, I'm hoping a donation will at least help out the amazing people who are saving this beautiful vessel.

I have been following the progress of the beautiful Queen Mary on Facebook and was delighted to be able to buy the Saltire she carried on her trip back up the Clyde at the start of her refurbishment. I was also fortunate to be able to see her on our last trip home to Glasgow in August. Keep up the great work!
