The restoration and refurbishment of the Haining House
The Haining Charitable Trust

Help save the Haining and make it a Place For Everyone

For 500 years, the Haining estate has been at the heart of the ancient burgh of Selkirk. Now, through a sympathetic and innovative programme of renovation and redevelopment, we are breathing fresh air into this much-loved place, bringing new life and purpose to its neglected spaces, and opening up the Haining for everyone to enjoy.

At the heart of our plans is the refurbishment of the Category ‘A’ listed Mansion House. When it came into the ownership of the Haining Charitable Trust in 2010, the estate was in a very rundown condition. The mansion house in particular was suffering from extensive damage and requires substantial structural renovation. We need to carry out significant works to repair and stabilise the building, and then to shape its interior and make it fit for the 21st Century for access by people of all ages and abilities.

Making sure that the Haining really is A Place For Everyone is the central mission in our bold plans for regeneration. Our redevelopment will create brand new exciting and accessible educational and recreational opportunities and celebrate Selkirk’s distinctive heritage and strong community spirit.

Regenerating the Haining will have broad-ranging benefits far beyond the estate itself. As well as enhancing facilities and opportunities for the local community, it will bring a much-needed boost to the wider economy of the South of Scotland by creating jobs and stimulating the visitor market.

Through environmentally sensitive and high-quality redevelopment, the Haining will be able to meet a huge range of cultural and recreational demands. As well as teeming with wildlife, plants, and birds of all kinds, the Haining is also home to a menagerie of curiosities, including Old Ginger, the Walking Tree, the Clootie Tree, and Selkirk Castle / Peel Hill, a Scheduled Ancient Monument of outstanding national value. Accessible, open and free, the Haining is ideally placed help us reconnect and thrive.

The cost of all the renovation works at the Haining is £3.7 million. Thanks to generous support from a range of funders, we have already raised £3.5 million towards this total. We are now about to step into the final phase of this remarkable transformation and need to keep our fundraising going to complete the work.

The incredible support of our funders and our dedicated band of volunteers means we are making good progress in saving the house and bringing it into use for everyone in our community. But we still have some way to go. We’ve already come a long way - can you help us finish the journey by making a donation please?

Please help us make the Haining a Place For Everyone. Donating online is easy. To make a donation, simply click on the big red button at the top of this page. All donations are welcome and your support means so much to us. Thank you.
