World Food Aid has launched an urgent campaign to support families across India and Pakistan affected by the worst floods in Punjab’s history.

The devastating August 2025 floods the most severe in over four decades have claimed lives and displaced over a million people. In a matter of hours, entire communities lost their homes, crops, livestock, and livelihoods.

Clean water is scarce and the risk of disease is rising every day. Parents are struggling, unsure how they will feed their children tomorrow.

A Region in Crisis

Punjab the breadbasket of South Asia is home to over 160 million people who rely on agriculture. Recent floods have destroyed more than 600,000 acres of farmland, threatening a 20–25% drop in basmati rice production.

India and Pakistan together account for 97% of global basmati rice exports, with Punjab contributing nearly half of this supply. This means the crisis has not only local but also international implications impacting global food security.

From the comfort of the UK, the disaster may feel distant. But helping these families doesn’t just restore lives in Punjab it helps stabilise food supply chains for us all.

Laila Rice, a major exporter of basmati rice from Punjab, has mobilised its resources and is working closely with World Food Aid to ensure aid reaches the hardest-hit areas quickly and effectively.
